PowerPoint 2007 - Design Project


Grading Rubric You will create an original Design Template, then use the template to a create presentation with "Sample" Slide layout slides to illustrate how they will look with various types of content.


Directions:

  1. Create folder in your home directory PowerPoint fonder titled: Lastname Design Template Project

  2. Open a new blank presentation and display the Slide Masters.
    Examine each to see what is included in a normal template.


  3. Develop your Design Plan
    This Design document is a separate grade, so be sure you complete it well.

    1. Decide on a design plan / theme and general color scheme for your Design Template
    2. Open a new, blank Word document or PowerPoint presentation. Save it as Lastname Design Plan
      Use this file to document the various parts of your planning process.

    3. Plan, document and explain each of the following to plan your Design Template:
      1. What is the main purpose / look / appearance you plan to create.
        For example, think of 'who' will be using this template: a family theme, a state or city theme, a seasonal theme, a nature/natural theme, etc

      2. What color/color scheme is appropriate for your theme?
        Keep in mind the color theory information you learned.
        You could start with a pre-made color scheme, but you should make at least one modification.

      3. How do you want your background to look for all slides?
        This could be different for title slide(s), but there should be good consistency.

      4. What main background objects (master graphics) do you want on all slides?
        Consider the design elements and principles you have learned about.
        Consider sketching how the different types of slides may look.
        The elements you choose should appear in some form on all slides layout masters, though they may be arranged differently

      5. Plan design element arrangements for at least three types of slide layouts:
        Title slide / section header
        Title and Content / Two Content / Comparison / Title Only
        Blank / Content with Caption / Picture with Caption
        Include descritions and/or illustrations of the layout plans

    4. Save your Design Plan document in your Design Project folder, and turn in a copy before beginning to create any templates.

    5. As you design, add documentation of an difficulties you encounter and explain any changes you decide on. You will turn in an updated Design Plan with the final project turn-in


  4. Design Slide and Title Masters for your Template
    This is also a separately graded part of the overall Project.

    1. Open a new, blank presentation. Save the presentation as Lastname (name of theme) template.potx.
      Let PowerPoint place the file in the templates folder for now.

    2. Switch to Master View.

    3. Design your color scheme:
      1. Choose a Theme/Color Scheme that most closely matches your plan
      2. The purposes for the ten color scheme colors are listed and illustrated on the Create New Theme Colors dialog box.
      3. Adjust the colors to match your color planned color scheme,
      4. Be sure you choose colors that will be easy to read, and still fit your theme, as well as following guidelines for good color schemes.

    4. Design the template graphics to support your design plan, for your master slides
      1. Create background
      2. Draw/Create graphics elements you will want to use
      3. Keep in mind good color scheme design as you choose colors for your elements
      4. Use your three different layout plans for your element arrangement on the title masters on teh various content masters, and on other use slide masters. Similar slide layout types should have consistent styling.
      5. Follow good design practices for placement of your graphics
        Remember that template graphics should augment a presentation not dominate it or distract viewers from a presenter's message.

    5. Create Master Slides:
      1. Create at least 9 master slides - one like each of the standard masters in PowerPoint.
        You do not need to create the portrait layouts
      2. Arrange the graphics appropriately on each.
      3. Insert and arrange placeholders for content as needed.
      4. On layouts that can include bullets, choose bullets/image bullets/colors for all five levels of bullets.

    6. Check the consistency of the locations for placeholders an graphics on all layout masters.
      The position of your background elements should not 'jump around' from one slide to the next.

    7. When you are happy with your template design, resave it the Templates folder.

    8. To have a copy in your project folder to turn in, COPY (don't save again) into your Design Template Project folder. Ask for help if you are not sure where to find the file to do this.

    9. Turn in a copy of your presentation template and the updated copy of your Design document.


  5. Create Sample Slides PowerPoint slideshow
    This the third separately graded section of your Design Project.

    1. Create a new presentation, and apply your theme design template as the Slide Design.

    2. Save the new presentation as Lastname (name of theme) Template Sample Slides.ppt

    3. Choose a subject for your presentation
      Suggestions: a 'how to' relating to your theme; a travelog relating to your theme; a resume or family story relating to your theme

    4. Create eleven slides as follows:
      1. Title slide - include the theme name and your name
      2. Title and Content slide with bullets (show all five levels)
      3. Title and Content slide with a table or graph
      4. Section Header slide
      5. Two-Column slide with bullets (show at least two levels in each box)
      6. Two-Column slide with at least one box containing graphics
      7. Comparison slide - with appropriate content
      8. Title Only slide - add a swatch to display each color in your Color Scheme, with captions to state its use
      9. Blank slide - add a Word art and a SmartArt graphic - use to show off some accent colors
      10. Content with Caption slide - add a table or graph (whichever not on slide 3)
      11. Picture with Caption slide - add appropriate content

    5. Add a simple slide transition, and animate one or two elements on a each slide as you feel is appropriate.

    6. Test your slide show.

    7. When you are satisfied with your work, save and close.

Zip your Design Project folder containing all work and any graphic assets, and place a copy in the Turn- folder on the Common drive.
